MX records (short for Mail Exchange records) are the DNS settings that tell the internet where to deliver email for your domain. If you want messages sent to [email protected] to arrive in the right inbox, your MX records need to point to the correct mail server. Getting them right is essential, because incorrect MX records are one of the most common reasons email silently fails.
What MX records actually do #
When someone sends you an email, their mail server looks up your domain’s MX records to find out which server should receive the message. Each MX record includes a priority value, and lower numbers are tried first. This lets a domain have a primary mail server and one or more backups. In practice, most small setups use a single MX record, or a primary plus a backup.

Decide where your email will be hosted. If you use Disoh’s own mail service, the correct MX values are provided in your control panel. If you use an external provider, they will give you the exact MX records to enter. Have those values ready before making changes.
How to set up your MX records #
- Log in to the control panel or DNS manager for your domain.

- Locate any existing MX records and note them down.
- Add or edit the MX record so it points to your mail server’s hostname.
- Set the priority value (for a single server, a value such as 10 is common).
- Remove old MX records that point to a previous provider, so mail is not misrouted.

Changes take effect after DNS propagation, which is usually quick but can take a few hours.
Don’t forget SPF and DKIM #
MX records get mail delivered to you, but to make sure the mail you send is trusted, you should also set up SPF and DKIM records. These help prevent your outgoing messages from landing in spam folders and protect your domain from being used for spoofing. Your email provider will supply the exact values.

- Incoming mail not arriving: confirm the MX hostname is spelled correctly and old records are removed.
- Mail going to the wrong server: check that only the intended MX records exist.
