MP3: the universal standard #

MP3 is the most widely supported audio format in the world. Practically every device, browser, and media player can play it without any trouble, which makes it the safest choice for maximum compatibility. Its main points are:

  • Compatibility: plays virtually everywhere, on every device.
  • Simplicity: supported by all broadcasting software and directories.
  • Solid quality: sounds good at 128 kbps and above.

AAC: better quality at lower bitrates #

AAC is a more modern format that generally sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate, especially at lower bitrates. This makes it attractive when you want good quality while keeping bandwidth low. Its main points are:

  • Efficiency: better sound per kilobit, so it shines at lower bitrates.
