The biggest worry with any migration is downtime. The good news is that with the right sequence, you can move hosts without your visitors ever seeing an interruption. This guide explains how.
The golden rule: switch the domain last #
Downtime almost always comes from changing your domain before the new site is ready. Instead, build and fully test the site on the new host first, and only change your domain once you have confirmed everything works. Both sites stay online during the switch.
Step 1: Build and test on the new host #
- Upload your files and import your database to Disoh.
- Preview using a temporary URL or your computer’s hosts file.
- Check pages, forms, and database-driven content.
Step 2: Lower your DNS TTL in advance #
A day or two before, reduce the TTL on your records so the change spreads quickly when you make it.
Step 3: Switch during a quiet time #
Change your domain’s nameservers or A record when your traffic is lowest. Keep the old host active for a few days while DNS propagates worldwide.
Step 4: Watch email #
Confirm your MX records are correct so mail is not interrupted, and keep the old mailboxes briefly to catch anything in transit.
