When setting up email in an app, you enter server names and port numbers. Those ports decide how your device connects for receiving and sending mail. This guide explains the ports you need and which to use for a secure connection.
Incoming mail ports #
- IMAP with SSL: port 993 – the recommended way to receive mail, keeping it synced on the server.
- POP with SSL: port 995 – downloads mail to one device; use only if you specifically need POP.
Outgoing mail port #
- SMTP with SSL: port 465 – the recommended secure port for sending mail.
- SMTP submission: port 587 – an alternative sending port, also with encryption, if 465 is unavailable.
Always use the secure (SSL/TLS) ports #
The secure ports encrypt your connection so your password and messages are protected. Avoid the old unencrypted ports (143 for IMAP, 110 for POP, 25 for SMTP), which send data in the clear and are often blocked.
