What Bitrate Should You Use for Internet Radio Streaming?

Bitrate is one of the most important settings for your internet radio station, because it directly affects both how good your stream sounds and how reliably listeners can play it. Choosing a sensible bitrate is a balancing act: too low and the audio sounds poor, too high and some listeners will struggle with buffering. This guide explains what bitrate means and how to pick the right value.

What bitrate actually is #

Bitrate is the amount of audio data sent every second, measured in kilobits per second (kbps). A higher bitrate carries more detail and sounds better, but it also uses more bandwidth for both you and your listeners. It also affects how many simultaneous listeners your connection and plan can support, since every listener consumes the stream’s bitrate.

Common bitrate choices #

  • 64 kbps: acceptable for talk radio and speech, very light on bandwidth.
  • 128 kbps: the sweet spot for most music stations, good quality and broad compatibility.
  • 192 kbps: higher quality music, at the cost of more bandwidth per listener.
  • 256 kbps and above: premium quality, best reserved for stations confident their listeners have fast connections.

How to choose the right bitrate #

Think about your content and your audience. Speech and talk shows sound fine at lower bitrates, while music benefits from more. At the same time, consider that not everyone has a fast, stable connection, especially on mobile. For a typical music station aiming at a general audience, 128 kbps MP3 is a reliable, widely compatible default that balances quality and smooth playback.

Bitrate, listeners, and bandwidth #

Your total bandwidth use is roughly the bitrate multiplied by the number of listeners. This matters for two reasons:

  • A higher bitrate reduces how many listeners you can serve within a given bandwidth allowance.
  • Raising the bitrate also raises the connection quality each listener needs to play smoothly.

If you expect a large audience, a moderate bitrate keeps everyone streaming reliably.

Consider offering more than one stream #

With Icecast you can run multiple mount points at different bitrates, for example a 128 kbps stream and a lighter 64 kbps stream. This lets listeners on slower connections choose the version that plays best for them, while others enjoy higher quality.

Troubleshooting #

  • Frequent buffering: lower the bitrate to something more forgiving.
  • Audio sounds poor: raise the bitrate, within your bandwidth limits.
  • Mixed listener feedback: offer two bitrate options if using Icecast.
