How to Connect Mixxx to a SHOUTcast or Icecast Server

2 min read

Mixxx is a free, open-source DJ application that also doubles as broadcasting software, letting you mix tracks live and stream them straight to your SHOUTcast or Icecast server. It is a popular choice for DJs who want performance features and live streaming in one free package. This guide shows you how to connect Mixxx to your Disoh radio server.

Before you start #

Have your server details from your radio control panel ready:

  • Server type: SHOUTcast or Icecast.
  • Hostname or IP and port.
  • Source password.
  • For Icecast, the mount point and often a login (commonly source).

Opening the broadcasting settings #

  • Open Mixxx and go to Preferences.
  • Select the Live Broadcasting section.
  • Enable broadcasting and add a new connection if needed.

Entering your server details #

In the Live Broadcasting settings, fill in the fields to match your server:

  • Type: choose Icecast 2 or SHOUTcast to match your server.
  • Host: your server hostname or IP.
  • Port: your stream port.
  • Mount: the mount point (Icecast), for example /stream.
  • Login: usually source for Icecast.
  • Password: your source password.

Then set the encoding format and bitrate, such as MP3 at 128 kbps, making sure it matches what your server expects.

Going live #

  • Apply and close Preferences.
  • Enable broadcasting from the Mixxx toolbar or the Options menu.
  • Watch for a connected indicator.
  • Play a track and confirm it on your stream URL in a separate player.

Tips for a smooth show #

Because Mixxx is a full DJ tool, take advantage of its crossfader and beatmatching to create seamless transitions. Keep an eye on your levels so the broadcast is neither too quiet nor clipping, and do a short private test before promoting your live show to listeners.

Troubleshooting #

  • Will not connect: re-check type, host, port, mount, login, and password.
  • Connected but no audio: confirm a track is playing and routed to the master output.
  • Listeners hear drops: lower the bitrate or use a wired connection.

Need help? #
