The File Manager lets you view, upload, edit, and organise your website files directly in the browser, without an FTP client. This guide explains how to use it in cPanel.
Opening the File Manager #
- Log in to cPanel.
- In the Files section, open File Manager.
- Your website files live in public_html.
Common tasks #
- Upload: use the Upload button to add files.
- Edit: select a text file and choose Edit.
- Create: make new files or folders.
- Move/copy: select items and use the toolbar actions.
- Compress/extract: zip files or extract an uploaded archive.
Showing hidden files #
Files beginning with a dot, such as .htaccess, are hidden by default. Use the File Manager settings to show hidden files when you need to edit them.
Tips #
- Back up a file before editing it.
- Do not edit core files unless you know their purpose.
- Upload very large files over FTP if the browser upload struggles.
Troubleshooting #
- Cannot see .htaccess: enable hidden files in settings.
- Cannot save: check the file’s permissions.
