How do I create a domain pointer (alias) in DirectAdmin?

1 min read

A domain pointer, also called a domain alias, makes one domain show the same website as another. It is useful when you own several domains, such as different spellings or extensions, and want them all to open your main site. This guide explains how to set one up in DirectAdmin.

Pointer vs. redirect #

A pointer serves your existing site under the additional domain without changing the address in the browser, while a redirect sends visitors to your main domain and changes the URL. Choose a pointer when you want the extra domain to behave as an alias of your main site.

Adding a domain pointer #

  1. Log in to DirectAdmin.
  2. Go to Account Manager > Domain Pointers (under your domain setup).
  3. Enter the domain you want to point to your main site.
  4. Choose whether it is an alias.
  5. Save.

Point the domain’s DNS first #

For a pointer to work, the additional domain must actually resolve to your server. Make sure its nameservers or DNS point to Disoh, then add the pointer. Allow time for DNS changes to propagate.

When to use a pointer #

  • You registered .com and .nl versions and want both to show your site.
  • You own common misspellings of your domain.
  • You are consolidating brands onto one website.

Troubleshooting #

  • Alias not loading: confirm the domain’s DNS points to your server and has propagated.
  • Want the URL to change instead: use a redirect rather than a pointer.
