Pages are the backbone of most WordPress sites: your home, about, services, and contact pages are all built as WordPress pages. Unlike blog posts, pages are timeless and sit outside your chronological blog feed. Learning to create and edit them confidently is one of the most useful WordPress skills, and this guide walks you through the whole process.
Pages vs. posts: what is the difference? #
It helps to understand the distinction before you start. Pages are for permanent, standalone content such as your about or contact page. Posts are for dated, chronological content like news and blog articles, and they appear in your blog feed and can be organised with categories and tags. If in doubt, most core content on a business site should be a page.
How to create a new page #
- Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
- Go to Pages > Add New.
- Enter a clear title at the top.
- Add your content using the block editor.
- Click Publish when ready, or Save draft to finish later.
Editing an existing page #
- Go to Pages > All Pages.
- Hover over the page and click Edit.
- Make your changes in the editor.
- Click Update to save.
You can also click Quick Edit to change the title, slug, or status without opening the full editor.
Useful page settings #
In the settings panel beside the editor you will find several helpful options:
- Permalink (URL slug): keep it short and descriptive.
- Featured image: used by many themes at the top of the page.
- Page attributes: set a parent page to create a hierarchy, or choose a page template.
- Visibility and scheduling: publish now, schedule, or keep private.

- Use one clear title (H1) and structure content with H2 and H3 headings.
- Preview before publishing to check how it looks.
- Keep URLs clean and avoid changing them once published, or set a redirect if you must.

- Changes not showing: clear your cache and hard-refresh.
- Page not in the menu: pages are not added to menus automatically; add it under Appearance > Menus.
- Editor looks unfamiliar: your theme or a page builder may change the editing screen.
