Custom error pages replace plain browser errors, such as 404 Not Found, with your own branded, helpful page. This keeps visitors engaged and pointed back to working content. This guide explains how in cPanel.
Common error pages to customise #
- 404: page not found.
- 403: forbidden.
- 500: internal server error.
Creating a custom error page #
- Log in to cPanel.
- In the Advanced section, open Error Pages.
- Select the domain, then choose the error code (such as 404).
- Enter your HTML, using the buttons to add common tags if helpful.
- Save.
What to include #
- A clear message explaining the error.
- A link back to your homepage.
- A search box or links to popular pages.
- Your branding, so it still feels like your site.
WordPress note #
On a WordPress site, the theme usually controls the 404 page, so it is often better to edit it within WordPress rather than in cPanel.
Troubleshooting #
- Page not showing: confirm you edited the right domain and error code.
- WordPress ignores it: edit the theme’s 404 template instead.
