Your theme controls how your WordPress site looks. Installing a new one is quick, whether you choose a free theme from the WordPress directory or upload one you have bought. This guide covers both.
Option 1: Install a free theme from the directory #
- Go to Appearance > Themes > Add New.
- Browse or search for a theme.
- Click Install, then Activate.
Option 2: Upload a theme you purchased #
- Download the theme’s .zip file from the provider.
- Go to Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload Theme.
- Choose the .zip file and click Install Now.
- Click Activate.
After activating #
- Use Appearance > Customize to set your logo, colours, and menus.
- Check your pages still display correctly.
- Configure any theme-specific settings the developer provides.
Choosing a good theme #
- Pick a lightweight, well-reviewed theme for speed.
- Make sure it is actively maintained and updated.
- Avoid piling on features you will not use.
Troubleshooting #
- Upload fails: the file may exceed the upload limit; raise it or upload via File Manager.
- Site looks broken after switching: reactivate your previous theme, then investigate.
