How do I set up an email autoresponder in DirectAdmin?

1 min read

An autoresponder sends an automatic reply to anyone who emails a specific address. It is ideal for holiday notices, “we received your message” confirmations, or letting people know about opening hours. Here is how to set one up in DirectAdmin.

Before you start #

  • Make sure the email address already exists in your account.
  • Have your reply message and dates ready.

Step-by-step: create an autoresponder #

  1. Log in to DirectAdmin (usually at yourdomain.com:2222).
  2. Open Account Manager and click Autoresponders (sometimes “Vacation Messages”).
  3. Click Create Autoresponder.
  4. Choose the email address the autoresponder applies to.
  5. Type your reply in the message box, for example: “Thanks for your email. We will reply within one business day.”
  6. Optionally set a start and end date so it runs only while you are away.
  7. Click Create to activate it.

Writing a good autoresponse #

  • Keep it short and clear.
  • Mention when the sender can expect a real reply.
  • Include an alternative contact if it is urgent.
  • Avoid sharing sensitive details, since anyone who emails you will see it.

Turning it off #

  1. Return to Autoresponders.
  2. Select the autoresponder and click Delete, or edit it to change the dates.

Troubleshooting #

  • No reply is sent: confirm the autoresponder is enabled and the dates cover today.
  • Senders get replies repeatedly: most systems only reply once per sender within a set period, which is normal.
  • Formatting looks off: stick to plain text for the widest compatibility.
