How to Unlock a Domain and Get an EPP (Auth) Code for Transfer

1 min read

Before you can move a domain from one provider to another, two things usually need to happen at the current registrar: the domain must be unlocked, and you need its EPP code (also called an auth code or transfer key). These two safeguards exist to stop domains being moved without the owner’s permission. This guide walks through both so your transfer goes smoothly.

What the domain lock is #

Most domains have a “transfer lock” (sometimes shown as clientTransferProhibited) that prevents them from being transferred away. This is a good security feature, since it blocks unauthorised transfers, but it also means you must unlock the domain yourself before starting a legitimate transfer. Unlocking is a simple toggle in your account.

What the EPP or auth code is #

The EPP code is a unique password for your domain that authorises a transfer. The gaining registrar asks for this code to confirm that you, the rightful owner, have approved the move. Without it, the transfer cannot proceed. Think of it as a one-time key handed over to complete the change.

How to unlock your domain #

  • Log in to the account at your current registrar.
  • Open the Domener section and select the domain.
  • Find the Domain Lock or Transfer Lock setting.
  • Switch it to unlocked.
  • Save the change.

How to get your EPP code #

  • In the same domain settings, look for EPP code, auth code, or transfer key.
  • Request or reveal the code.
  • Copy it exactly, as it is case-sensitive and often contains symbols.
  • Some registrars email the code to your registrant address rather than showing it on screen.

A few things to check first #

To avoid a rejected transfer, confirm a few details before you begin. The domain should not be within the first 60 days of registration or a previous transfer, as this often blocks new transfers. Your registrant email should be current, since approval messages are sent there. And it helps to temporarily disable privacy protection if the transfer process cannot read your contact details.

Troubleshooting #

  • Transfer rejected: confirm the domain is unlocked and the EPP code is correct.
  • Code not accepted: re-copy it carefully, watching for case and symbols.
  • No approval email: update your registrant email and request the code again.
