Apache SpamAssassin scores incoming email and helps filter out spam before it clutters your inbox. Enabling and tuning it in cPanel keeps your mail cleaner. This guide explains how.
Enabling SpamAssassin #
- Log in to cPanel.
- In the Email section, open Spam Filters (Apache SpamAssassin).
- Turn the spam filter on.
Setting the spam threshold #
- The score threshold sets strictness; a lower number is stricter.
- A value around 5 is a common starting point.
- Raise it if real mail gets flagged; lower it if spam gets through.
Choosing what happens to spam #
- Move to a spam folder: keeps it out of the inbox but reviewable.
- Automatically delete: discards high-scoring spam; use with care.
Whitelist and blacklist #
Use the whitelist to always allow trusted senders and the blacklist to always block specific ones. Add addresses in the SpamAssassin settings.
Troubleshooting #
- Real mail flagged: raise the threshold and whitelist the sender.
- Spam still arriving: lower the threshold gradually.
- Missing mail: avoid auto-delete until you trust the settings.
