How do I block an IP address in DirectAdmin?

1 min read

If a particular IP address is causing trouble, such as repeated spam, abusive traffic, or failed login attempts, you can block it so it can no longer reach your site. DirectAdmin makes this simple with the IP Blocker. This guide explains how.

When to block an IP #

  • Persistent spam or abusive form submissions from one address.
  • Repeated suspicious login attempts.
  • A specific source of unwanted traffic.

Blocking an address #

  1. Log in to DirectAdmin.
  2. Go to the IP Blocker tool (under Account Manager or Advanced Features).
  3. Enter the IP address you want to block.
  4. Save to add it to the block list.

Blocking a range #

You can often block a range of addresses as well as a single IP, which is useful when abuse comes from many nearby addresses. Be cautious with ranges, as blocking too broadly can accidentally shut out legitimate visitors.

Unblocking #

If you block an address by mistake, return to the IP Blocker, find the entry, and remove it. It is easy to reverse, so do not worry about experimenting carefully.

A word of caution #

  • Do not block your own IP address, or you will lock yourself out.
  • Blocking IPs is a blunt tool; determined abusers change addresses.
  • For login security, also use strong passwords and two-factor authentication.

Troubleshooting #

  • Locked yourself out: contact support to remove the block.
  • Abuse continues from new IPs: combine blocking with spam filtering and security plugins.
