Different applications need different PHP versions, and newer versions are faster and more secure. cPanel’s MultiPHP Manager lets you set the PHP version per domain. This guide explains how.
Why the PHP version matters #
- Newer versions are faster and more secure.
- Some software requires a minimum version.
- Very old versions may lack security updates.
Changing your PHP version #
- Log in to cPanel.
- In the Software section, open MultiPHP Manager.
- Tick the domain you want to change.
- Choose the PHP version from the dropdown.
- Click Apply.
Checking the active version #
Create a PHP info page, or in WordPress check Tools > Site Health > Info > Server to confirm the version in use.
Before you switch #
- Back up your site first.
- Update your software so it supports the newer version.
- Move up one version at a time if you are far behind.
Troubleshooting #
- Site breaks: switch back, update your software, then try again.
- Missing extension: enable it via MultiPHP INI Editor or PHP extensions.
