A redirect automatically sends visitors from one URL to another. Use it when you move a page, rebrand, or want a short link to point somewhere else. DirectAdmin makes this simple. Here is how.
When to use a redirect #
- You moved or renamed a page and want old links to still work.
- You want a memorable short URL to point to a longer one.
- You are consolidating several addresses into one.
Step-by-step: create a redirect #
- Log in to DirectAdmin (usually yourdomain.com:2222).
- Go to Account Manager and click Redirects (sometimes “Site Redirection”).
- Click Create Redirect.
- Enter the path you want to redirect from (for example, /old-page).
- Enter the full destination URL.
- Choose the redirect type (see below) and save.
301 vs 302 redirects #
- 301 (permanent): best for moved pages. It passes SEO value and tells search engines the change is permanent.
- 302 (temporary): use when the change is short-term.
For most content moves, choose a 301.
Editing or removing a redirect #
- Return to Redirects.
- Find the entry in the list.
- Edit the destination, or delete it to remove the redirect.
Troubleshooting #
- Redirect loops: make sure the source and destination are not the same or circular.
- Old page still loads: clear your browser and site cache.
- Wrong destination: check for typos in the target URL.
