How do I create an FTP account in cPanel?

An FTP account lets you upload and manage website files with a program like FileZilla. Creating a separate account is safer than sharing your main login. If your hosting uses cPanel, here is how.

Step-by-step: create an FTP account #

  1. Log in to cPanel.
  2. In the Files section, click FTP Accounts.
  3. Enter a username and choose the domain.
  4. Set a strong password.
  5. Set the Directory to limit access (for example, a single folder).
  6. Set a quota or leave it unlimited if allowed.
  7. Click Create FTP Account.

Getting the connection details #

  • In the FTP Accounts list, click Configure FTP Client next to your account.
  • Note the server (host), username, and port.

Connecting with FileZilla #

  1. Open FileZilla and create a new site.
  2. Host: your server or domain.
  3. Port: 21 for FTP, or use the secure option if provided.
  4. Username and password: the FTP account details.
  5. Connect and upload files into public_html.

Tips #

  • Limit each account to the folder it needs.
  • Delete FTP accounts you no longer use.
  • Prefer secure FTP (FTPS/SFTP) where available.

Troubleshooting #

  • Cannot connect: re-check host, port, and password.
  • Files not on the site: confirm they are in the correct directory.
  • Timeouts: switch between active and passive mode.
