How do I enable two-factor authentication in DirectAdmin?

1 min read

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second layer of security to your DirectAdmin login, so a password alone is not enough to get in. Given that DirectAdmin controls your files, databases, and email, enabling 2FA is a smart move. This guide explains how.

How 2FA protects you #

With 2FA on, logging in requires your password plus a time-based code from an authenticator app on your phone. Even if someone learns your password, they cannot log in without your device.

What you need #

  • A smartphone with an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator or Authy.

Enabling 2FA #

  1. Log in to DirectAdmin.
  2. Open your account or security settings and find Two-Step Authentication.
  3. Enable it and scan the QR code with your authenticator app.
  4. Enter the code shown in the app to confirm.
  5. Save, and store any backup code somewhere safe.

Logging in with 2FA #

From then on, after your password you will enter the current six-digit code from your app. The code changes every 30 seconds, so use the one showing at the time.

Do not lose access #

  • Save your backup code in a safe place, separate from your phone.
  • If you change phones, move or re-add the account in your authenticator.

Troubleshooting #

  • Code rejected: ensure your phone’s clock is set automatically.
  • Lost your phone: use the backup code, or contact support to verify your identity.
