This guide explains your options.<\/p>\n<h2>Adjust your comment settings<\/h2>\n<p>Under <strong>Settings &gt; Discussion<\/strong> you can reduce spam significantly:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Require comments to be manually approved before appearing.<\/li>\n<li>Hold comments with links for moderation.<\/li>\n<li>Require a name and email.<\/li>\n<li>Close comments on posts after a number of days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Use an anti-spam plugin<\/h2>\n<p>An anti-spam plugin automatically filters out the vast majority of spam comments before you ever see them. This is the single most effective step and saves you constant manual moderation.<\/p>\n<h2>Moderating comments<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Review pending comments under <strong>Comments<\/strong> in the dashboard.<\/li>\n<li>Approve genuine ones, and mark junk as spam so filters learn.<\/li>\n<li>Block persistent spammers by keyword, email, or IP in the Discussion settings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Consider disabling comments<\/h2>\n<p>If you do not need comments, turning them off entirely removes the spam problem. You can disable them site-wide in Discussion settings, and turn them off on existing posts in bulk.
