# How do I enable two-factor authentication in DirectAdmin?

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second layer of security to your DirectAdmin login, so a password alone is not enough to get in. Given that DirectAdmin controls your files, databases, and email, enabling 2FA is a smart move. This guide explains how.

## How 2FA protects you

With 2FA on, logging in requires your password plus a time-based code from an authenticator app on your phone. Even if someone learns your password, they cannot log in without your device.

## What you need

- A smartphone with an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator or Authy.

## Enabling 2FA

1. Log in to DirectAdmin.
2. Open your account or security settings and find **Two-Step Authentication**.
3. Enable it and scan the QR code with your authenticator app.
4. Enter the code shown in the app to confirm.
5. Save, and store any backup code somewhere safe.

## Logging in with 2FA

From then on, after your password you will enter the current six-digit code from your app. The code changes every 30 seconds, so use the one showing at the time.

## Do not lose access

- Save your backup code in a safe place, separate from your phone.
- If you change phones, move or re-add the account in your authenticator.

## Troubleshooting

- **Code rejected:** ensure your phone's clock is set automatically.
- **Lost your phone:** use the backup code, or contact support to verify your identity.
