# What Is a Domain Name and How Does It Work?

A **domain name** is the online address people use to find your website — like [disoh.com](https://disoh.com/). It replaces long, complex IP addresses with something readable and memorable. Without domain names, you’d have to type in numbers to visit a site.

Your domain is your brand’s first impression online. It’s what users remember, type, and share when they want to reach you.

#### How Domain Names Work

When someone enters your domain name in their browser:

1. The browser sends a request to the **DNS (Domain Name System)**.
2. The DNS looks up which server your domain points to.
3. It connects to that server, loads your site, and displays your content.

In simple terms: the DNS translates human language into machine language so your site can load seamlessly.

#### The Structure of a Domain Name

Every domain consists of three main parts:

- **Subdomain:** Optional, like *blog.disoh.co*.
- **Second-Level Domain (SLD):** The core name, e.g. *disoh*.
- **Top-Level Domain (TLD):** The extension, such as *.com*, *.co*, or *.org*.

Together they form your complete web address — www.disoh.com
